Swire History

In 1816, a young Yorkshireman named John Swire opened a modest import-export house in Liverpool. By 1866, his sons had seen the future and pioneered efficient new trade corridors with the emerging giant of the Far East, China.

Their company grew rapidly and became known in Shanghai and Hong Kong by its Chinese “hong” name, “Taikoo,” meaning great and ancient. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, the Swire Group is a ranking multinational commercial group with interests spanning four continents and five major industry divisions – from property to aviation, beverage, marine services, and trading and industrial operations.

The group’s privately-owned parent company is headquartered in London, while their core businesses are held by Swire Pacific Ltd, a leading listed company in Hong Kong. As Swire Pacific’s real estate development arm, Swire Properties is itself listed on the Hong Kong exchange (symbol: 1972). Swire Properties has been actively involved in Miami real estate development since the late 1970’s.

The Swire name, branded under its distinctive flag insignia, has come to stand for confidence, proficiency and impeccable standards worldwide. Our venerable history is keenly respected by all Swire operations, each fostering long-term sustainable growth through active management supported by a robust financial base.
